Red milkwood meels
I have always admired the shape and proportions of Cobbett and Jenkin's No. 2 club. I had a piece of driftwood that could be turned into CJ2 clubs, but I was hesitant to do so. To me, it appeared that the CJ2 clubs were too long for comfortable open style swinging, and too light for closed style swinging. So I wrote to Paul Wolkowinski, and asked him how often he used his CJ2's. He assured me that he used them all the time. He used them to warm up his shoulders before using heavier clubs, and he said they were excellent for learning and entrenching the correct meel turning technique. That was good enough for me. I decided to turn my driftwood into CJ2's.
So I started making the CJ2 clubs, but left the weight at 3.7 kg. This is an intermediate weight, pending the completion of the turpentine tree meels. Once the clubs are trimmed and correctly shaped, I expect the weight to be about 2.5 kg. This is a bit lighter than Paul's CJ2's. The red milkwood that I use is not as dense as the jarrah that Paul uses.
19 September 2014. Shaping, filing, and sanding complete. The clubs weigh 2.8 kg each. I will give them two coats of varnish.
